HMH adds Dexascan to Radiology Department to measure bone density, analyze body fat
Open House planned for Spring 2010Harrison Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the expansion of our Radiology Department, which includes newly purchased technology and a radiology area designated specifically for women. The hospital’s existing Radiology Department will remain on the main floor, with an expanded imaging area developed in the former Emergency Department space which was vacated in 2007.
Female patients will benefit from a separate entrance for greater privacy. The area will house our ultrasound and a future digital mammography unit. A federal grant has made it possible to purchase a Dexascan, used for more accurate bone density testing to detect osteoporosis. It also provides accurate measurement of body composition, which provides doctors with better data to assess, monitor and treat a variety of diseases and disorders, such as obesity, eating disorders, cystic fibrosis, wasting syndrome (caused by HIV/AIDS) and chronic renal failure.
“Previously, the hospital leased a mobile unit for bone densitometry which was available only one or two days a month. Now, women will have access to greater technology on a daily basis,” said Don Wynn, Director of Ancillary Services.
HMH also purchased an Inbody analyzer machine, portable technology which measures water weight, muscle mass, body fat and more. Located in the hospital’s Wellness Center, the analyzer can be used for a nominal fee. “And because it’s portable, we’ll be able to take it into the community when we do health screenings and fairs,” said Wynn.
Probably the most significant new technology at HMH will be a new 64-slice CT scanner.
“Acquiring the 64-slice CT scanner will add another level of technology for this facility. The technology at HMH is equal to or surpasses that of larger facilities,” said Wynn.
The 64-slice CT scanner also will allow HMH to conduct additional cardiology exams, which previously required the patient to travel longer distances to another facility. “Anytime we are able to offer technology that keeps our patients closer to home, we know we’re moving in the right direction,” said Wynn.
This newly renovated radiology area is scheduled for completion in Spring 2010. Look for information regarding an Open House for this new area as the date draws near.
