A message from our Chief Executive Officer

by Sheila Currans

This past year was quite a period of forward momentum for Harrison Memorial Hospital. We saw a number of significant accomplishments, including successful accreditation once again by The Joint Commission and the American College of Pathologists.

We saw the opening of our cardiac catheterization lab, bringing interventional cardiacprocedures closer to home for many. And we witnessed a five percent increase in market share, validating our commitment to growth and improvement.

Our surgical site infection rate in 2011 was less than 1%, which falls far below the national average. Our commitment to patient safety is apparent, as we dispensed more than 190,000 medications without a single significant patient error.

While other hospitals find themselves being purchased by larger, national or regional healthcare provider systems, Harrison Memorial Hospital has remained independently strong. This allows us to stand by our mantra of "small town, big medicine -- all from people you know and trust."

Our hospital was named one of the top 20 Best Places To Work in Kentucky, a badge of honor we proudly wear. In 2011, we've seen turnovers of 10% in hospital staff, and, specifically, 7% within the clinical workforce -- the lowest employee turnover in our hospital's recorded history.

And those same employees make a significantly positive contribution to the businesses and tax base that make up our local economy. Our employees who work here tend to live and spend here -- a fact that benefits everyone in Harrison and surrounding counties.

But most importantly, we've accomplished all these milestones while never losing sight of why we're here -- to provide outstanding quality health care with compassion. And I've personally witnessed act after act of selfless compassion toward patients and their families by our staff. It's what motivates me to be a better person every day.

Take a moment to view the numbers and consider how vital Harrison Memorial Hospital is to you, your family and the community as a whole. We never forget how critical you are to making our hospital a success. And we pledge to continually add new services, physicians and technology so we can restore quality of life to many, positively change clinical outcomes and save the lives of our neighbors and friends.
