Keep active, practice good nutrition this winter!

Don’t let inclement, winter weather slow down your healthy eating and fitness routine. Winter is the time of year notorious for packing on pounds, with decreased exercise and an abundance of carb-packed foods.

Harrison Memorial Hospital offers its Wellness Center for a low monthly fee of $20, with no yearly contract. You’ll have access to three fitness trainers who can personalize a fitness regimen for you. An indoor facility packed with all the latest exercise equipment will help you stay on track until Spring. And if you’re a member of the Silver Sneakers Program offered by Essence and Humana, your monthly $20 fee will be paid. If you’re interested in joining our Wellness Center or the Silver Sneakers program, call 859.235.3553.

In conjunction with exercise, HMH offers nutrition counseling with registered dietitians and diabetes educators.

“The winter months bring too many temptations for some of us. The key to success is better planning to avoid setting yourself up for failure. That means taking advantage of seasonal fruits and vegetables and getting creative with your recipes. Alter your recipes by eliminating the extra fats and replacing them with seasonings and spices which add flavor, but not extra calories,” said Jara Bauer, HMH registered dietitian.

Bauer points out that some insurance providers cover medical nutrition therapy, covering costs for treatment for weight loss, cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes.

“We start by taking a medical and lifestyle history with each patient. Together, we look at his or her daily routine and what sacrifices he or she is willing to make and set goals and plan personal menus. Then the patient can return for follow-up visits to measure progress,” said Bauer.
