Bracken County Health Fair scheduled for August 21: Join health professionals from Harrison Memorial Hospital, as they partner with the Bracken County Health Department to offer a Community Health Fair Saturday, August 21, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. This event, FREE and open to the public, will be held at the Bracken County Health Department. FREE screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose, body fat analysis and breathing capacity will be offered. Male participants can receive a FREE Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test to screen for prostate cancer.
Spotlight on Hospital's Auxiliary Gift Shop: For years, Harrison Memorial Hospital's Gift Shop has been operated by the HMH Auxiliary, who in turn donates proceeds to Harrison Memorial Hospital. Our Gift Shop, located in the hospital's front lobby, is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and occasionally on weekends. Shoppers can find unique gifts not found elsewhere in Cynthiana, including clothing, baby gifts, home decor, handbags, and more.
Masquerade Jewelry Sale Planned: Back by popular demand is the HMH Auxiliary Masquerade Jewelry Sale scheduled for Thursday, September 30, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital's front lobby. An outside jewelry vendor will be on hand with items beginning as low as $5 and up for purchase. Payroll deduction will be available for items purchased by hospital employees.
Join Us For The Blue Hydrangea Tea: The Harrison County Cancer Coalition will host a Blue Hydrangea Tea on Tuesday, September 14 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Harrison County Health Department Community Room on Oddville Avenue. This event will be an educational seminar, as well as a fundraiser with a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the University of Kentucky Ovarian Cancer Research Project. A guest speaker will be on hand discussing ovarian cancer risk factors, signs and symptoms. An update will be given on the latest ovarian cancer research being conducted, as well.
Registration begins at 5 p.m., with our guest speaker beginning at 5:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and a free gift will be given away to the first 50 registrants. For more information or to donate an item to our silent auction, please call 859.234.5094.
New Women’s Imaging Center Open House Set for Sept. 30: In an effort to continue providing comprehensive women's care to our patients, Harrison Memorial Hospital is proud to announce the grand opening of our Women's Imaging Center. The new digital imaging area, located on the first floor of the hospital in the space previously occupied by the emergency department, was carefully designed with women in mind. (Read more...)
Who’s The Fastest Competitor In Town? Little Feet, Big Feet Competition It's time once again for the annual Little Feet, Big Feet Competition scheduled for Saturday, September 11 in downtown Cynthiana. With a starting line time of 9:30 a.m., the community's smallest, yet mightiest, runners will hit the streets to compete in the one-mile course. This event, in its eighth year, turns out more than 400 children and adults annually and is sponsored by the CHP Wellness Committee. (Read more...)
Born To Run 5K Brings Adult Competitors for the 13th Year:Prior to our littlest competitors taking to the streets, adult runners and walkers will kick off the 13th annual Born to Run 5K at 8 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. The 3.1 mile course, known as the flattest 5K in Kentucky, will bring more than 500 competitors to downtown Cynthiana.
Corporate teams will consist of two categories -- business/industry/school system and church/clubs. Awards will be given to the team with the best score, as well as the team with the most participants.
Registration fees are $15 prior to August 31 and $20 after that time. Pre-registered participants are guaranteed to receive a FREE long-sleeved t-shirt. To register, you'll find sign-up forms at Harrison Memorial Hospital and the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce office.
Join healthy activities in our community for Second Sunday: Mark your calendars for this year's Second Sunday event to be held Sunday, October 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. Second Sunday is an annual statewide campaign to encourage all types of physical activity within the local community. It's designed to get Kentuckians moving, while celebrating the importance of family and friends. The end goal is to improve Kentucky's health status and become a role model for nationwide awareness. New, non-invasive TIF procedure at HMH to combat acid reflux, GERD: Millions of Americans struggle with acid reflux disease, also referred to as GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Common symptoms include frequent heartburn, regurgitation, reflux-related sleep disorders, bloating, and burning in the mouth or throat, just to name a few. More severe cases can cause discomfort in the chest, persistent cough and dental erosions or therapy-resistant gum disease.
"In a healthy person who swallows, the valve between the esophagus and stomach opens up enough to allow food to pass, but then closes again to prevent contents of the stomach from refluxing back into the esophagus. But someone who suffers from GERD may have an abnormal, dysfunctional antireflux valve. That means once they swallow, the valve can no longer close, allowing stomach fluids to backtrack," says HMH surgeon Karl Schulstad, M.D. (Read more...)
