As part of a capital campaign, you may be asked to consider a "suggested" amount. The use of a ‘suggested consideration amount’ is a fundraising principle followed by organizations undertaking well-planned campaigns, yet it often raises questions with potential donors.
What is a consideration amount? What do I do if I want to give less or more?
The amount is exactly what it says – for consideration only. It’s a starting point for a solicitation team to begin talking to potential donors about participating in Harrison Memorial Hospital’s campaign. It is neither a demand, requirement, or bill. A donor prospect may give less, or more, than the amount suggested for consideration.
How did you come up with that amount?
An anonymous committee was created to establish the consideration amount. The committee was comprised of key professional members of the community. They were asked to sit on the committee because their knowledge of the community enabled them to provide realistic perceptions of the giving capability of donor prospects. There was no group discussion about financial particulars of any donor, but rather, each committee member completed a private workbook. Professional fundraising counsel compiled the responses of each committee member thus determining the consideration amounts.
Why ask for a specific amount at all?
To achieve a goal of $1 million, Harrison Memorial Hospital’s campaign is asking potential donors to consider larger gifts pledged over three-to five-years. If potential donors were only asked to give an outright cash gift rather than considering a longer-term gift, most would reach into their pockets and give $20, $50, or $100, thus lengthening the time for Harrison Memorial Hospital to meet its fundraising goal.

- Shows that Harrison Memorial Hospital is committed to achieving an ambitious fundraising goal, and
- Most importantly, encourages serious consideration of a generous gift
